Intermittent Fasting

I tried Intermittent Fasting to see if I would lose weight.

When I decided to try intermittent fasting I said, “No way will this work.”  Not only did I have bad eating habits such as snacking, I craved the three C’s, cookies, cake and chocolate and enjoyed the occasional sweetened carmel coffee drink. Feed up I decided to try Intermittent Fasting.

Intermittent Fasting is when you restrict meal times to a certain amount of hours within a twenty four hour period. What you would do is select a time period, normally eight to sixteen hour period, where you would restrict your eating period to eight hours of the day, fasting for the last sixteen hours until the next morning. If you are not a fan of diets and exercising try Intermittent Fasting. You can eat the same foods that you would normally eat although you can get better results the healthier you eat.

I decided to try the sixteen hour fast at first, and then modified my fasting hours to fifteen hours. The rules are not set in stone they can be adjusted to fit your lifestyle.  For instance, some people enjoy eating breakfast in the morning about 8am, where as others prefer to eat breakfast around the noon.  Determining fasting hours can be adjusted to fit your schedule.  The following information covers my first week of intermittent fasting.

How I start my day.

Breakfast. The most important meal of my day, some people may not agree on that statement but for my fasting journey I started with breakfast around seven in the morning with a bowl of oatmeal and fruit or fruit with greek yogurt. I stayed away from sweets such as muffins, pastries and sugary drinks and limited the amount of carbs I ate. I did not eliminate carbohydrates completely but I did reduce the amount of bread and pasta I ate.

At noon I had a salad no dressing, spiced it up with jalapeño peppers and olives or baked chicken breast and steamed vegetables. Around three o’clock I had fruit such as an apple, blueberries, strawberries or a banana if I felt hungry. Three o’clock is the time I normally start craving.  After four o’clock I drink water for the night skipping dinner in the evening.

Benefit of Intermittent fasting.

A surprising benefit of my Intermittent Fast was that I learned to control cravings and late night eating. I’d snack at work at my desk or anytime I had a stressful or bad day I hit the sweets.  My appetite was out of control. Office parties have loads of food mostly cakes and sweets. Now I can say, “No, I’ll pass”  and feel good about that decision.  Before I began fasting it was difficult to decline delicious treats anytime and anywhere.  I’ve been able to eat what I want without over eating and as long as I stop eating at a certain time it reduced the amount of food I eat in a day.

The results were impressive.  I immediately began to see signs on my slimmer waste line.

When I ate through out the entire day I was constantly snacking, then I’d become irritable or hangry whenever I did not eat.  Intermittent fasting has allowed me to experience a certain calmness when it comes to eating. It has allowed me to have a balanced relationship with food that is more of a lifestyle than just another trendy food fad. Click on the link to one of my favorite cookbooks, The Joy of Cooking.
