Starting a walking routine is a great way to lose pounds and you can do it anytime and anywhere. Even if it’s been a while since the last time you worked out, walking is a great way to get up and moving. Let’s say you have an hour or forty five minutes for lunch. You can walk twenty to thirty minutes and still have plenty of time to have your lunch, granted that may mean that you’ll need to bring your lunch or pick up something that is already prepared.
One great idea is to walk to your distination for lunch instead of driving. Now everyone may not be in walking distance of their favorite place to eat, but the point is going out to explore different surroundings is a great way to find new places for lunch. It may be that you find a park bench where you can enjoy nature or an awesome view before making your way back to work.
On my walks to explore I’ve discovered forest preserves with wild flowers and an assortment of birds and butterflies. I live in the city, our winters can be very brutal so finding hidden parks in the city are a treat. Take the time to watch the seasons change, as plants and flowers begin to sprout out of the ground and flower buds that bloom beautiful shades of yellow, pink and red. Trees transform their bare branches to lush green leafy trees and or flowering blooms, it’s amazing, each day there is something new to see.
If nature is not your thing then you can always listen to music or an audible book just be careful and pay attention to the surroundings. Make walking fun, invite friends from the office, buy a tracker to monitor your progress rather you use your phone to track your steps, Apple watch or Fitbit it can be fun to watch your steps add up while motivating you to keep moving.
There are lots of different exercise programs out there but the problem most people have is committing to a new exercise regime. It can be a challenge, rather you’re short on time due to family obligations or work or you simply don’t want to deal with the hassle of going to the gym. Walking can be done anytime anywhere including while you wait for your child to get out of practice or rehearsal. Step out of the car and start walking.
As always, check with your physician before starting an exercise program and don’t forget to warm up first.
